Risk assessment for hazardous waste disposal in abandoned mines

چکیده
A significant technological challenge is the search for appropriate disposal of hazardous waste, It is evident that technologies that are simple, practical and economical for use should be developed, and they should both safeguard public health and reduce environmental pollution. Temporal disposal on the ground surface is a common approach in many European countries, a technique that could contaminate the environment in a short or long time perspective. Private enterprises and communities are responsible for the contamination but the cost for safe disposal of the waste is often estimated to be unacceptable and the critical situation may therefore become permanent. Disposal in abandoned mines is believed to be an achievable, low risk and relatively cheap way of disposal of hazardous waste. The objective of the research programrne described below is to investigate the prerequisites for using this alternative, to outline suitable design and construction technology and to make a performance assessment with special respect to environmental safety and cost,

Modelling flow and solute transport in fractured porous media
A BEM numerical model is presented for the flow and solute transport in fractured porous media, which is based on the dual reciprocity method multi domain scheme (DRM-MD). The model solves the 3D flow equation based on the Darcy law in the coupled system of porous media, fracture network and fracture intersections. Unlike the discrete fracture models, which for simplicity use Fick's law in the ...
متن کاملGAO-01-57 Hazardous Waste: Effect of Proposed Rule's Extra Cleanup Requirements Is Uncertain
The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976, as amended, established three key requirements governing the treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. First, under the land disposal requirements, this waste usually must be treated to minimize threats to human health and the environment before it is disposed of on land. Second, under the minimum technology requirements, cer...

A new multi-objective mathematical model for hazardous waste management considering social and environmental issues
Hazardous waste management incorporates collection, separation, treatment, recycling and disposal of hazardous wastes. In this paper, a new multi-objective mixed integer model is presented for hazardous waste collection problem. The model aims to minimize transportation and construction costs, and environmental and population risks in hazardous waste management systems. This model is applied in...
